Sport Medicine

Dr. Kien Trinh is a highly accomplished Sports Medicine Physician, Acupuncturist, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner internationally recognized for his work in acupuncture research, and medical education innovation. He serves as Medical Director for Boxing Canada and has been the team physician for major sporting events worldwide including many Olympics and Pan American Games.

Jarek is a highly experienced physical therapist and Director of Rehabilitation Services at Ancaster Sports Medicine Centre, with extensive training in acupuncture. As a former competitive fencer, he brings decades of international athletic and therapeutic expertise to his clinical practice.

We offer acupuncture exclusively at our satellite location, with a focus on musculoskeletal conditions such as neck, shoulder and knee pain overseen by Dr. Trinh, the Program Chair of the Medical Acupuncture Program at McMaster University.

There is an established body of scientific evidence suggesting that acupuncture is effective for musculoskeletal conditions such as headaches, neck pain, knee pain and back pain (Cochrane Library).

Innovative Spirit 

Our team is actively involved in research. Dr. Trinh leads a group of international researchers on neck pain for a Cochrane systematic review. We are conducting a randomized controlled study on rotator cuff tendinopathy and examining the effects of doping on athletic performance. Our team has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the past.  We are known for our spirit in innovation.  Dr. K. Trinh won the Innovator of Distinction Award and Faculty of Health Sciences Outstanding Preceptor Award from McMaster University.

Dr. Kien Trinh

Dr. Kien Trinh is a distinguished Sports Medicine Physician with decades of experience in clinical care, research, and medical education. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Ancaster Sports Medicine Centre and Medical Director for Boxing Canada. Internationally recognized for his work in both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Trinh offers a unique, evidence-based approach to patient care, blending advanced diagnostic techniques with acupuncture and other complementary treatments.

​

A leader in sports medicine, Dr. Trinh has served as team physician for Canada at the 2003 and 2007 Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic and Brazil. He was also the Canadian team physician for boxing at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and played key medical roles at the 2008 Beijing and 2016 Rio Olympic Games. He was the Lead Physician for boxing at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and became the Medical Director for Boxing Canada in 2014.

Dr. Trinh holds a Diploma in Sports Medicine from the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine and has advanced training in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. A lifelong learner, he holds an MSc in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University, where he also teaches as a clinical-track professor. He is also an Oxford University MSc graduate (Class of 2020), earned a degree from Harvard University in 2024, and is currently pursuing legal studies at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law—just to name a few of his recent academic accomplishments. A lifelong teacher as well, Dr. Trinh has been honored with multiple awards, including the McMaster University Innovator Award, the Faculty of Health Sciences Outstanding Preceptor Award and the Mentor Educator Award from the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

An accomplished researcher, Dr. Trinh leads international systematic reviews with the Cochrane Collaboration and has published extensively on acupuncture, musculoskeletal health, and evidence-based medicine. He is the Research Chair for the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine and is one of the original developers of the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), now used globally in medical admissions.

At the Ancaster Sports Medicine Centre, Dr. Trinh and his multidisciplinary team are dedicated to restoring health and performance using an integrative approach that combines cutting-edge Western medical practices with the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
